For those whose income is insufficient to cover the residential fees charged by the society, assistance may be available from the Social Services Department of the relevant local authority, usually Buckinghamshire County Council. Under present rules, however, no assistance is available to anyone whose total assets exceed £20,500 (this limit applies in England; Scotland and Wales have different limits). Assets include property, although this is not normally taken into account if the property is still occupied by one's partner, or by a relative who is either over 60 or is incapacitated. Since residential care fees can quickly erode the assets of anyone with a low income, it is recommended that Social Services be approached well before the person's assets are reduced to £20,500, as it can take some time for their assessment to be carried out.
The Nursing Home Fees Agency is an independent financial adviser specialising in care homes, and a great deal of helpful information can be found among the Fact Sheets published by Age Concern England.
